Tom Metcalfe was the son of Thomas and Mary Metcalfe, née Wharton. Both parents were born at Hawes, Yorkshire.

1891 Hawes, Yorkshire Census: 1, West End - Thomas Metcalfe, aged 5 years, born Hawes, son of Thomas and Mary Metcalfe.

In the 1901 (part of) Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Yorkshire Census a Thomas Metcalfe, aged 15 years, was living at Elwith [Helwith] Bridge with his uncle Leonard Metcalfe, aged 36 years. Their places of birth are given as, Gale [Gayle], Yorkshire.
