1911 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: 9, Cooperative Street - Rufus Thompson, aged 20 years, born Penrith, Wales [sic]. [Rufus and his brother, George Arnold Thompson, who was born at Penrith, Cumberland, were boarding with William and Hannah Shorrock.]

THOMPSON – October 5th, at the Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich, Pte. Rufus Thompson, R.F.A., of 72 Park Road, Barnoldswick, aged 25 years.

A SOLDIER’S FUNERAL

The death took place on Thursday of last week at the Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich, after a very brief illness, of Private Rufus Thompson, R.F.A. Deceased, who was 25 years of age, had only been in the Army a few months. He leaves a wife and one child, residing at 72, Park Road, Barnoldswick. The remains were brought home for internment on Sunday, the funeral taking place at Gill Church on Tuesday afternoon. A short service was conducted at the house by the Rev. E. Winnard, Baptist Minister. The cortege was headed by the Barnoldswick Cadet Company, in command of Capt. E. Baldwin and Lt. Smith, the coffin being draped with the Union Jack and surmounted by a number of wreaths. The burial service was read by Rev. F.W. Patten (vicar). At the close the customary three volleys were fired over the grave and the ‘Last Post’ sounded by the buglers.
