CROSSHILLS – THE LATE CORPORAL, J. A. SMITH

We reproduce a photograph of the late Corpl. J. A. Smith, formerly of Aire Street, Junction, Crosshills, who died on February 4th last. He joined the Army in November, 1916, and was posted to the South Staffordshire Regiment, but was afterwards transferred to the Royal Air Force. He went out to France in January, 1918, and served in the 73rd Squadron until he was demobilised on January 28th, 1919. His death was much lamented by a large circle of friends. He was, in civil life, an overlooker for Messrs. T. Snowden & Son, Argyll Mills, Bingley. A promising vocalist, at the time of joining the Forces, Corporal Smith was a soloist at Kildwick Parish Church, and had been a prize winner at the Wharfedale Musical Festival, Ilkley. He was also a member of the Crosshills and District Choral Union and the Steeton Glee Union. We tender sincere sympathy to the family.

SMITH – In sad but loving memory of our dear son and brother, Corporal John Allan Smith, of Junction, Crosshills, who departed this life February 4th, 1919, from the effects of active service.

This day brings back sad memories
Of one who was called to rest;
And those who think of him today
Are those who loved him best.
So sad and sudden was the call,
His sudden death surprised us all;
Perhaps some day we shall understand
When we meet again in the Better Land.
Gone is the face we loved so dear,
Silent the voice we loved to hear;
Too far away for sight or speech,
But not too far for thoughts to reach.

From Father, Mother, Brothers and Sisters.
