William Stanger Thompson was the son of Sarah Thompson, née Stanger (died 1881). Sarah, the daughter of Matthew and Sarah Stanger, was born at Knarsdale, Northumberland and had married Francis Thompson on the 30 April 1867. Francis, who was born at Redmire, Yorkshire, died in 1871.
