BARNOLDSWICK - FORMER BARNOLDSWICK BUTCHER DIES

We regret to announce the death on December 19th last at the 21st Casualty Clearing Station, France, of Private John Fort Berry, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James Berry, 151, Euston Road, Morecambe, and late of Gisburn Road, Barnoldswick, a grandson of Mr. B. Rimington, 16, Aireview Terrace, Broughton Road, Skipton. Before joining up in September, 1914, the deceased soldier, who was in the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, assisted his father in the butchering business. He was drafted out to France in May, 1915, with a detachment to fill up the depleted ranks of the King's Own. Exactly twelve months after joining up he sustained a bullet wound in the neck. Fortunately it was not serious, and after treatment in France he was soon back in the firing line. He had his first leave at the beginning of 1916, and was invalided back home with septic poisoning at the beginning of 1917. He was in hospital at Newport, Mon., and afterwards in training at Oswestry. He returned to France on his 21st birthday, November 8th 1917, having spent his 19th and 20th birthdays in the trenches. He had only been out in France six weeks when news came of his death from wounds received in action. We tender our sympathy to the bereaved family.
