STEETON-WITH-EASTBURN – THE WAR’S TOLL

Another well-known Steeton soldier in the person of Gunner Herbert Stott has made the great sacrifice on the Western Front. The sad news (this is Steeton’s 25th soldier’s death) was received on Wednesday morning by the sister-in-law, Mrs. Ernest Stott. In a 1etter from an officer in her brother-in-law’s battery, Mrs. Stott learned that an explosion followed a fire in a gun pit and Gunner Stott, along with 14 officers and men, was killed. The deceased soldier, who was 23 years of age and a single man, was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stott, of High Street, Steeton, and was a young man of a quiet and unassuming nature, and previous to joining up in the Howitzer Brigade, R F.A., at Otley, two years ago last May, was employed by Messrs. John Clough and Sons, manufacturers, Steeton. Gunner Stott’s elder brother, Private Ernest Stott, Northumberland Fusiliers, who had his left arm amputated owing to wounds received at the end of March, is being nursed towards a long deferred recovery in a London hospital.
