Herbert Allen was the son of Elijah and Alice Allen, née Preston. Elijah was born at Sedbergh, Yorkshire and Alice at Kendal, Westmorland. Herbert was the cousin of Gunner Alexander Kirkbride (129805) (q.v.).

WOUNDED AND MISSING

Mr. and Mrs. E. Allen, Gayle, Hawes, have received news that their youngest son, Second-Lieutenant Herbert Allen, R.A.F., has been missing since August 10th. The young airman, who is 19 years of age, joined the Army in June, 1917, and was transferred to the R.A.F. in December. He was gazetted in March last, and went overseas in June.

A GAYLE OFFICER MISSING

Second Lieutenant Herbert Allan, R.A.F., youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Allen, Gayle, Hawes, has been missing since August 10th. Nothing has been heard of him since his machine went out along with others to bomb the German lines.
