COWLING – MISSING SINCE JUNE

Private George Ion, of the Northumberland Fusiliers, son of Mr. Thos. Ion, Mount Pleasant, Cowling, has been missing since the 15th of June last, and has not been heard from since. A letter is now to hand from the Regiment’s chaplain, the Rev. James T. Tunstall, who states that his regiment made an attack on June 15th, when a number of its men were surrounded, who, along with a number of wounded, fell into the enemy’s hands. Pte. Ion was amongst the number, and is probably a prisoner in Germany, but could not say whether he was wounded or not. Pte. Ion joined the forces on the 4th August 1916, previous to which he was employed as a farm hand.
